There are many candidates to claim the designation as “planet’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a recent publication, however, that title belongs to the mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before automated sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel required around ten sawyers working over three months,” writes the author. “Using wind-driven sawmills, the same amount of cut lumber might be produced in less than a week.”
Owing to their rapid mechanical cutter, that turned logs into planks using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders could construct ships faster than any other nation, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic and artistic supremacy across Europe and the world.
The inventor's sawmill, argues the writer, was “humanity’s first true industrial apparatus.” A windmill turned a wheel. One component converted the rotary motion into vertical action to power the cutting blade. Another component changed that same spinning motion into a sideway’s movement feeding the timber to the blade. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead one precise increment per stroke.
“Each element was simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius was to combine these parts so they operated within a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each descending stroke while moving with each upward motion. It was a remarkably intelligent use of basic parts.”
Which leads us up to the current puzzle. I’d like for you to reimagine a key the fundamental concepts underpinning Corneliszoon’s invention.
Design a mechanism that turns circular motion to up-and-down motion. You have these components only: A rotating disc. Two pegs. Two bars. A “guide”, that is a tube or housing through which one of the bars can slide perfectly. (Assume it is possible to mount components on a stand, so the parts don’t collapse.)
