Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal at Spectators

The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“It was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases involve:

Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the billionaire owner.
