Stifled for large periods, the Seagulls were ensnared by the visiting manager's tactical cage. This approach came to fruition when Jarrod Bowen scored a swift counter-attack, firing home from a narrow angle only seconds after Callum Wilson stepped onto the field. Yet, true to form at the home ground, Brighton staged a last-minute rally, with Rutter hammering in the leveler from a goalmouth scramble to earn a point.
For much of the game, Brighton's attack was unusually lacklustre, failing to register a solitary shot that tested the keeper. Albion's hopes of returning to continental football continue to be hampered by such inconsistency. West Ham, also struggling near the bottom of the table, adopted a low defensive block, content to absorb pressure and launch direct passes for their quick attackers to pursue. The poor conditions further hampered the flow of the match.
“The worse the conditions got, the greater the chance of a mistake or deflection resulting in a score,” the feeling grew.
The deadlock was eventually broken in the favor. One costly error from Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke was seized by Wilson, who immediately sent Bowen clear to score. The goal appeared to secured a crucial three points for Nuno's side in their fight against relegation. Brighton, awoken by the conceded goal, pressed for an equaliser, going close when Maximilian Kilman almost deflected the ball into his own net.
Given that stoppage-time drama have become habitual at the Amex, the home supporters retained a sliver of expectation. Their belief was rewarded in during closing stages. Amid a hectic penalty area scramble, Jan Paul van Hecke displayed composure to slide the ball across the area, where Rutter arrived to blast it home. The equaliser triggered wild scenes from the Brighton contingent, while it was a severe setback to West Ham's safety hopes.
The result does little to alleviate the relegation concerns for West Ham, who remain deeply entrenched in the battle at the foot of the table. For Brighton, it represents another instance of their resilient spirit, but also underscores the inconsistency that are holding back their season.
