Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
